It is a day when the children do not have to do chores and
they get to be the center of attention.
They get new white clothes and run the church service. Rather than me telling you about White Sunday
from an outsiders perspective. I had my
students journal about White Sunday.
Here are a few of there writings.
(I did not correct the grammar)
“On
this day, the kids will all wear white.
The kids will sing songs, do skits, and dances. Everything will be all white and spiritually. When is the white Sunday? White Sunday is will next week Sunday.
There will be happy faces and wow!
The boys and girls will all look beautiful! They look like angles. Parent’s wil
be proud and glad to see their children perform Bible stories and sing church
music that will uplift their hearts.
My mom will tell me “Go wear your
beautiful white dress and don’t be cheecky to perform in front of many
people” My mom will encourage me and
help me to have a happy spirit and to be grateful to God. I love White Sunday
and I know it will be a fun day, and will be my happiest day.”

“I
really like White Sunday because it gives me joy and a better spiritual
soul. Also it makes my family happy and
proud. I like to see the smiles on their
faces. What I don’t like about White Sunday is that when we get to do our White
Sunday performance. I get embarrassed because I’m the biggest and the tallest
in the class. With all that being said, I asked the question are we having
turkey for White Sunday? My dad goes, “yep, you guessed it’ Yes!yes! yes!! My
favorite part of White Sunday, FOOD, especially turkey. We get to have rice, chicken, corn beef,
stuffing, pilikaki, palusami, ulu, pua’a, maile, I’a, isumu, loi and ma’a! just
kidding! Just trying to see if you’re catching along. We only had rice, chicken,
and turkey. After all of that fuzz, I get to sit on the chair and watch Broadway
Housewives, Face Off, and Drop Dead Diva. Man is White Sunday part of my life.
It takes me to places where my imagination flies. Yes, I do go to church thank
you, for those who don’t believe I go to church.”
-Andrew
Sara and I went to church with Amber this morning to see the
White Sunday performances. The children
were adorable all dressed up. The
morning service was the children’s department and the evening service will be
the youth department. There was one
little girl probably three years old who really got into the songs. She stood up front praising God through
singing and dancing. She didn’t care
what anyone thought. She had her eyes
closed and was in her own little world.
More classroom improvements!
A few weeks ago the principal came to me and asked if I would use a
SmartBoard if he installed one in my room.
Of course I said yes. I was
skeptical of whether or not I would get it, but it is here! I am still figuring out how to use all the
functions. If anyone out there has any
cool tips of lessons that utilize the SmartBoard please let me know. The students think that it means we are going
to watch movies everyday. Each day since
it’s been installed they come in and ask “are we watching a movie today” and
each day I say “no, this isn’t a movie theater it’s a classroom.” Apparently
many of the students had SmartBoards in elementary school and all they were
used for was movies (great use of the limited education budget right there). They will learn that it has other uses. They will also learn that even when we do
watch a movie it will tie into a lesson and they will have assignments to go
along with it.
